How are you feeling this morning? Sleepy? Groggy? Homicidal? If that sounds right, you’re not alone. It is, after all, the Monday after Daylight Saving Time. A whole hour of our lives is missing and for most of us, the adjustment period is brutal at best.
Sure, springing the clocks forward an hour isn’t so bad over the weekend, when there’s plenty of time to ease into the day. But on Monday morning, when the workweek rears its ugly head, the alarm clock is blaring, it’s still pitch black outside, and even the dog is burrowing deeper into the covers? That can be a bit harder to handle. (And if you’ve got young children, I hear it’s even worse—please accept my condolences, and also this shot of espresso!)
While it may seem that Daylight Saving Time is nothing but a torture device, meant to rob us of a precious hour of sleep, the practice of changing the clocks each spring and fall has a legitimate purpose. Ancient civilizations always adjusted their schedules to suit the season, and the USA started a similar thing in 1918, when President Woodrow Wilson signed Daylight Saving Time into law as part of effort to support World War I. The war ended, but Daylight Saving Time didn’t; instead, it stuck around because that extra hour of sunlight was good for energy costs, businesses, and outdoor entertainment.
While these benefits sound great in theory, they won’t help you get through the next few days. That’s where Port City Java comes in. We’ve collected some foolproof ways to spring forward as gracefully as possible. Read them now, before it’s too late.
• Hit the snooze button.
I bet you thought we were going suggest some crazy idea, like getting up at your usual time. No, thank you! It’s dark, it’s cold, and it feels like 4AM because no matter what the clock says, it is 4AM. There’s no reason to be a hero. We give you permission to hit your snooze button and take some of those stolen minutes back.
• Treat yourself to the Port City Java drive-thru.
Since you slept in, you’re running late. Skip your shower, don’t bother with the coffee maker, and forget about breakfast—time is of the essence! Luckily you can take care of all your needs without leaving the comfort of your car, thanks to the Port City Java drive-thru. The best part? You can hide the fact that you accidentally put on two different shoes for a little while longer.
• Order espresso, and lots of it.
Desperate times call for desperate measures. Forget your usual green juice, small black coffee, or humble latte. Have you ever had a Red Eye—two shots of espresso added to a cup of coffee? No? Perfect. Now’s your chance.
• Hello, afternoon pick-me-up!
Some people will tell you to take a nap or, even worse, go for a run in the sun, as if enough Vitamin D will ease the pain of this terrible, terrible day. We say save the exercise for later in the week, when your body’s had time to deal with Daylight Saving Time. For now, we recommend an extra dose of Vitamin C, also known as coffee. Sure it’s a crutch, but it’s a crutch with actual health benefits. Not even Dr. Oz can argue with those facts.
By following our Daylight Saving Time Survival Guide, you’ll conquer this week, adjust to the time change, and maybe even find it in your heart to appreciate that extra hour of sunlight. We’ll keep our fingers crossed. In the meantime, I’ve got a few Red Eyes to order.
